The debate on the possible impact of genetically modified (GM) crops on biodiversity shows that so far there is no consensus on generally accepted assessment criteria for environmental harm. This debate stems primarily not from a shortage of data, but rather from the absence of criteria for assessing the effects of GM plants on biodiversity. Since there are no exact assessment criteria, regulatory decision-making processes are often not transparent and can be difficult to understand. This increases the danger that decisions on environmental risks from GM plants may appear arbitrary.

150 Jahre nach der Veröffentlichung von Darwins "On the Origin of Species" hat die Evolutionstheorie nichts von ihrer Anziehungskraft verloren. Sie stellt Fragen, die uns alle berühren: Wie sind Organismen in ihrer Formenvielfalt entstanden? Wie verändern sie sich im Laufe der Zeit und wozu sind gewisse Merkmale überhaupt gut? Woher kommen wir, welche Gemeinsamkeiten oder Unterschiede zu anderen Lebewesen zeichnen uns Menschen aus?

Fossil independence and substantial reductions in CO₂ emissions seem to be possible with 2^nd generation biofuels. New technologies allow a full carbon-to-fuel conversion of non-edible plant parts such as straw or wood, and the cultivation of algae or salt-resistant plants uncouples bioenergy from food production. Nevertheless, impacts on biodiversity, global land and water use are widely unclear and their competitiveness with 1^st generation biofuels and electric mobility is an open question.
